A bunch of recent high school grads get together for an outing in a cabin in the woods. Later that evening, someone suggests the game “Dead Body,” a party game where one player is assigned to be the murderer, and one the first victim. The rest of the players have to figure out who the killer is before they become victims themselves. You can guess what happens next. Wait! Let me try that again in my horror trailer voice-over voice: “The kids decide to play ‘Dead Body,’ but what they don’t know is that someone’s already playing it…for real!”
As low budget cheesy horror films go, this one’s not bad. The acting is passable, the special effects are much better than other films with comparable budgets, and there are a few nice touches with the camera here and there. Does it have some horror clichés? Of course it does. Do the characters make a lot of stupid decisions? Of course they do. That’s the nature of the biz when it comes to horror movies. But it’s not unbearable. And it’s a neat little murder mystery, besides. Think Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None meets any number of teenage slasher films. I have to admit that even though I figured out the whodunnit, I didn’t get the whydunnit. I still enjoyed it anyway.
This is the only credit for director Bobbin Ramsey, but I’d be willing to give Bobbin another go on the next film. IMDB has this scored at a 4.8, but I think that’s just a bit low. I’d give it an even 5, maybe even a 5.5 if you temper your expectations before going into it. It’s not going to blow you away (with a nail gun), but you might dig it (with a shovel). (running time 1:25)
