This one is a mixed bag. On the one hand, it seems very dated, and very low budget. I kept thinking it reminded me of an ‘80s film due to the soundtrack and lighting. Then I realized that the ‘80s film it reminded me of (one of them, at least) was Blade Runner. In fact, in many ways this could have been a prequel to Blade Runner. That’s not to say that it’s at the same level as BR, but for a low-budget Sci-fi flick, it’s not too bad.
First, the good stuff: It’s pretty well put together for the money they had to work with. It looks a lot better than some of the Direct to Video (DTV) horror crap out there. I also thought the performances weren’t bad, either. I like Caity Lotz. A lotz. (Get it?) She impressed me in The Pact, and did so again here, playing a dual role. I thought she managed to make them seem separate entities, and whatever skills she lacks actually served her well in the robotic title role, much like Arnold in The Terminator. I suppose it doesn’t hurt that she walks around nude for a chunk of the film, either. (Don’t worry; the shadows and robot pasties hide pretty much everything.)
That said, there were some issues with the film. The script/dialogue could use a little work, and I found it a little hard to follow at times. Also, as much as the score reminded me of Blade Runner, it got old a little too fast for me. It was also hard to make out some of the dialogue, too, but that may be a result of the low budget.
If you like old-fashioned science-fiction films, such as Blade Runner, Logan’s Run, the Planet of the Apes series, and Looker, then you’ll probably enjoy this as well. If you’re more interested in Michael Bay and Transformers, you should probably look elsewhere. It’s got a 6.1 at IMDB, which is a little high for my liking. Based on my ranking system, I’d put it in the 5.0-5.5 range, depending on how much you like the genre and performers. (running time 1:31)
