Based on what I had read about this one, I had semi-high expectations for it. I probably shouldn’t have. It does very little new in the slasher genre, none of the characters are very developed beyond a single trait (“he’s an alcoholic,” “he’s a coward,” etc.), and the ending was frustrating. The worst thing, though, by far, was the “slasher.” And although I NEVER want to reveal the ending to a film, in this case I’m going to make an exception. If you really don’t want to know, skip the entire following paragraph.
SPOILER ALERT! We never find out who the killers are, and perhaps worse, never find out their motivations. I certainly have no problem with keeping one of those two things mysterious, but not both. Michael Myers seems to have no motivation, but we know who he is, and we know at least a little about him. The shark in Jaws doesn’t seem to have motivation (other than “he’s a shark” I guess), but again, we know what he is. Can you imagine a film where we NEVER get to see the shark and the entire film is just people you don’t know that much about swimming around and then being pulled under by…something? And we never find out what that something is? Well, that’s this film. SPOILER ALERT END.
The acting isn’t terrible, considering the little bit of dialogue they’re given, and if you like gore, there were a few particularly nasty moments (don’t eat while watching!), but ultimately, this just feels woefully underdeveloped and incomplete. It’s like it once might have been a complete film, but someone went through and removed large chunks of it, leaving the rest for us to see…and scratch our heads when it’s over. IMDB says 4.7. I can’t even go that high. 4.0 for me. (running time 1:19)
