Last Knights (2015)

This one was disappointing. It had the star power. The performances were okay. I generally like Clive Owen, and almost always like Morgan Freeman. But it just fell flat. I think the biggest problem was the writing. It sounded like someone wrote it for a freshman creative writing class. It’s basically a retelling of the Japanese tale of the 47 Ronin, but set in some fictitious time and place (that looks an awful lot like Medieval England, I guess), and whoever converted it has the knowledge of how knight-themed movies go, but that’s about all he/she has, as it was nothing but clichés of the genre, and really nothing new. The dialogue was the worst of it. There’s a lot of love for it on the IMDB boards, but I’ve got to imagine that those are the people who also know, and expect, those same clichés. (Hell, many of them have probably written their own story like this one.)

If you catch it on a free channel or it pops up on Netflix, then yeah, maybe give it a watch. But I wouldn’t shell out any money for it, unless you really, really like movies about knights. IMDB=6.2 (as I said, fanboys), but I can’t go any higher than a 4.5, or MAYBE a 5.0, if you like Clive Owen or one of the other actors. (running time 1:55)
