Another film that surprised me. I expected a slap-dash, made-for-tv, paint-by-numbers horror film. After all, it stars Brian Austin Green, and the guy who I always refer to as “the dude who played Christopher Titus’ stupid brother” (Zack Ward). But although the story did have a “made for TV” vibe about it, the overall quality was pretty good. Ward was a little over the top, but from him, we can buy it. He does “crazy” well. Green and the others did a good job. I liked him in the Fox show “The Sarah Conner Chronicles,” too, so I guess he’s slowly been converting me. Good for him. The others are solid, especially Joanne Kelly as Claire.
The story may or may not be a reimagining of a Spanish film, Fin (The End). A bunch of friends on a trip stop at a mountain resort, only to find the place empty, with some disturbing “messages” left behind. Add to that the crazy weather, and the unnatural quiet of the place, and it’s clear that all is not as it should be. Do they stay, and perhaps fall victim to the same fate as the previous occupants, or make a run for it? To tell you much beyond that would chance ruining it for you. It’s a great premise, though, and seems like it could easily be a Stephen King miniseries. So if you like that sort of thing…
Ultimately, though, I think the film fails, due to an unsatisfying ending, although with such a great setup, it’s hard to think of an ending that WOULD have been satisfying, so I can’t fault them too much. If you’re looking for a creepy, easy watch, check it out.
IMDB gives it a 4.8. I don’t think a 5.5 would be out of the question, though. If nothing else, it’s certainly one of those films you’ll want to talk about after you’ve seen it. (running time 1:32)
