Martha: Do you think he’s evil? [excitedly] What if he is?! You know, when I was little I used to have this fantasy I was dating Lex Luthor.

Sophie: From Superman?  Wasn’t he, like, a genius? Your guy’s more like a sexy Rainman.

That’s not a bad description of “Mr. Right,” played by Sam Rockwell. If you know me, you know that I have a bit of a man-crush on Sam, and this film is no exception. He’s at his Rockwelliest here, playing a dancing, quirky hitman/assassin who—like some sort of demented Buddhist—has tapped into the flow of the universe and now uses his powers to dispense his own brand of Karma.

Anna Kendrick plays Martha, who has just walked out on her boyfriend and into a closet with a bottle (several) of wine. A chance encounter leads to a date and…well, you can guess where it’s going. And that might be the problem with the film. The setup isn’t all that original, and the overall story is a little dull. But honestly, that doesn’t matter because the best part of the movie is the relationship between the two leads. One of the reasons I love Rockwell in just about everything is that no matter who he plays, he always seems to exhibit this profound joy, just to Be. Be that character, in that place, at that moment. He exudes it. He’s got that here, too. And Anna Kendrick is completely adorable as Martha. I really can’t understand why she doesn’t get more comedy work—her timing is spot-on, and she’s one of the few actresses I can think of who can match Rockwell’s quirkiness, quirk for quirk. The chemistry between them works really well, I think, and honestly—I’d love to see the two of them in a more traditional romantic comedy. They could be the modern versions of Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.

In terms of support, Tim Roth is capable, doing well with what he’s given (although his affected accent is awful), but it’s RZA, as Steve, who steals the few scenes he’s in.

I really wanted to love this. And I think maybe I did. I mean, I feel like I could sit down and watch it again right now. But as I said, it does have problems. The editing feels a bit off, for example, and it gets really outlandish at times. But if you can set your disbelief aside for a moment, I think you’ll be surprised at how charmed you are by this little film. So it’s a recommendation with a caveat. Don’t take it too seriously, and don’t watch it for the plot.

IMDB says 6.3. I think that’s probably just about right. Call it a 6.5–7.0 if you’re a Rockwell fanatic, like me.
